OptiClear IPL supports Newbury DED response

Valarie Jerome OptiClear
Dr Valarie Jerome, the owner of Valarie Jerome Optometrists in Newbury, is the first optometrist in the country to use OptiClear Intense Pulse Light (IPL), the latest pioneering technology for patients with dry eye disease (DED).

The independent and privately-owned optometrists, located on Northbrook Street, was one of the first to purchase a state-of-the-art machine to safely and effectively treat causes of dry eye by getting to the root of the problem; inflammation.

Championing the very latest technology and treatments for DED, Dr Valarie Jerome, who suffers from dry eye and can relate to her patients, is leading the way in the UK.

The OptiClear IPL uses light energy to rejuvenate Meibomian glands; ultimately unblocking the glands and relieving the debilitating symptoms. It can also improve the outcomes of other vision issues, including ocular surface disease and rosacea. Just four treatments are required, and it is suitable for patients up to age 80+, making it a fast, effective and painless treatment.

With vast optometry knowledge, experience and expertise, both in the UK and US, Dr Valarie Jerome, says: “DED is one of the most common conditions I see in clinic. It has a significant impact on the quality of life of my patients due to symptoms like foreign body sensation, pain, blurred vision, dryness or watery eyes. It can also make regular activities, such as driving, engaging in sports or reading more difficult.

“I am always looking to provide my patients with the latest in technological eye care, and with DED affecting more and more patients, I was keen to invest in OptiClear IPL as soon as it launched. The state-of-the-art machine allows me to offer a new pain-free, long-term treatment for my dry eye patients.
“As an optometrist I want to be at the forefront of the latest treatments available, offering patients cutting-edge technology and treatments, so I am proud to be one of the first in the UK to use the OptiClear IPL.”

David Killengray, managing director at Spectrum Ophthalmics, adds: “Dry Eye Disease is a growing epidemic. We are thrilled to bring OptiClear IPL technology to the UK and firmly believe that this clinically proven product will enhance the treatment clinicians offer their patients, managing care from start to finish and allowing for better results.”

Passionate about eye care, Dr Valarie Jerome provides regular eye health for the homeless through a vision clinic in conjunction with Newbury Soup Kitchen. She also assisted local refugees with eye health and spectacles working with the West Berkshire Council in Reading.

A true entrepreneur, Dr Valarie Jerome is a member of the Newbury BID Council, was named one of the Top 100 UK female entrepreneurs by f:entrepreneur and most recently, was a nominee for a Newbury Town Business Civic Award.
